The Perils of Email

One of true advantages of e-mail is that it lets us communicate with each other regardless of time and distance. It’s a good way to send messages to colleagues and co-workers who need to be on the receiving end of important information. It’s also a great way to stay in touch with others while out of the office.

However, there can be a real downside to using e-mail when it’s used to communicate a message that should more properly be delivered in person. What kind of messages are these? Complex matters that
require real-time back-and-forth discussion. Anything that is emotionally charged that could easily be misinterpreted if the wrong “tone” is assumed to be present in an e-mail. Bad news that should be delivered in person so as to “cushion the blow.”

The important point here is to be aware that there are times when in-person conversation or communication by phone is more appropriate and efficient. E-mail has its benefits, but it should be consciously chosen with an understanding of its limitations.

Don’t let poor email practices run down the employee morale of your organization.
