Encouraging Participation

Employees are a storehouse of ideas. But, to take advantage of their knowledge and creativity you must first get them to participate.

People have different (natural) levels of “outgoingness” and desire to be participative. However, there are a number of things you can do to encourage those employees who tend to hold back.

If you’re in charge at a staff meeting, for example, ask participants in a low-key, non-threatening way, for their opinions. Be sure to give them positive feedback whenever they do contribute.

Remove barriers to their willingness to participate (e.g., if there are people in your environment who always “hog the floor” at meetings, ask to hear from those that have not yet had an opportunity to contribute). If you are a boss or supervisor, let it be known that you are also always available to talk in private.

The benefit of getting full participation from all of your employees is a richness of ideas and options that might otherwise sit fallow. Not only that — inclusion and increased participation are likely to lead to a boost in the overall level of employee morale.
