Most everyone has heard of cross training in sports, but what about cross training your employees?
This technique has been proven time after time to be successful.
Unfortunately, too often is an employee is hired for a specific position and as the years pass by that employee continues to do the same job day in and day out.
Eventually, boredom sets in, the work produced is average, and the employee disillusioned.
An excellent solution is to cross train employees.
By using this motivational technique, an employee is given the opportunity to learn, grow, and stay motivated, while providing support to another employee who may have to be out of the office due to illness, family emergency, business travel, and so on.
This keeps the organization moving forward with its mission, while the employee is left feeling secure and inspired.
This works especially well when one department may be slow but another overloaded. Cross-trained employees can be moved where the support is needed most. Additionally, cross train employees can be on the same level, or different levels.
For example, a senior manager could have a mid-level manager cross-trained to support his or her work should the workload become too much or unexpected time away from office arises. No one need feel threatened as the mid-level manager simply picks up the slack when needed.
